Soderkoping Process

The Söderköping process was initiated by the Swedish government, IOM and UNHCR in 2001 in order to address cross-border cooperation issues arising with EU enlargement eastwards and promote dialogue on migration and asylum issues.

Since 2004, the process has focused on sharing experiences of the newly acceded EU Member States (Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia) with countries on the external eastern border of the enlarged EU – Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine.

The aim is for Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine to align their migration and asylum related legislation, polices and practices with EU Acquis communautaire standards; the Process also aims to create an effective and sustainable regional network on asylum and migration-related issues among participating countries. The Söderköping Process follows a thematic approach, bringing more focus to specific themes within asylum-migration nexus.

A database of migration-related national legislation was created in 10 countries and national statistics on regular and irregular migration are collected and made available on-line   at www.soderkoping.org.ua.
