Olena, a chef from Luhansk, cooks 50 liters of borshch and 300 pancakes for lunch for 150 displaced persons currently staying at a collective centre in a village called Mayaki, or the Beacons, near Odesa.

Elmaz finds a minute to welcome us and quickly returns to the kitchen where she and her mother Avaz are busy cooking traditional Crimean Tatar dishes.

Borys* returned to his native village in Vinnytsia Region last year. Alas, this was not an ordinary return to his roots, as he had to flee from conflict in Luhansk Region where he had lived for almost 40 years.
