Ukrainian Officials Studied European Labour Migration Practices

Kharkiv Orphans Learned How to Prevent from Falling Prey to Human Traffickers

A range of counter-trafficking trainings for orphaned students and graduates of vocational schools was conducted in Kharkiv with IOM Ukraine’s support. Over 160 students attended the course, standing for over a half of orphaned and left-behind boys who study in Kharkiv vocational schools. According to IOM Ukraine, young boys and men suffer the most from labour exploitation in Ukraine and abroad. Orphaned and left-behind teenagers are one of the most vulnerable groups. Oleksandr Polianskyi from the Kharkiv NGO “Your Right” explains that “very often orphans quit their first job because of a relatively low salary incomparable to the allowance in shelters. Willing to ‘make a quick buck’ they often agree to irregular employment.” >>More

 

IOM-led Monitoring Checked Holding Facilities for Irregular Migrants in Zakarpattia

Representatives of Ukrainian governmental bodies, international organizations, Ombudsman’s Office, Embassy of the Netherlands and NGOs visited three special holding facilities for irregular migrants in Zakarpattia: Chop Temporary Holding Facility (THF), Mukachevo THF and Luzhanka Special Premise (SP). These facilities with the capacity of 60, 32 and 6 places respectively are administered by the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. >>More

 

Kyiv State Employment Centres’ Staff Gets Basic Counter-Trafficking Knowledge

IOM Ukraine’s Counter-Trafficking Unit conducted training for the staff of the Kyiv State Employment Centres. The training participants learned about general rules of safe employment, principles of National Counter-Trafficking Referral Mechanism and IOM Ukraine’s rehabilitation programme for victims of trafficking. >>More

 

«At Home in Ukraine»: Experience the Diversity of Life Stories!

On Friday, 13 April, in Kyiv, was the first night for «At Home in Ukraine» theatre play produced by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission in Ukraine. The play is based on real life stories of migrants and ethnic minority communities living in Ukraine. The play director is Mr. Anatolii Cherkov, the Ukrainian Theatre Association member, co-founder of the Kyiv First Theatre School, the “Dakh” theatre actor and the artistic director of the “Theatre in the Room”. Young professional and amateur actors perform in the play. >>More

 

IOM’s Regional Director Visits Ukraine

IOM’s Regional Director for Eastern, South-Eastern Europe and Central Asia Ms. Renate Held conducted a familiarization visit to Ukraine on 25-30 March 2012. During the meetings with Ukrainian authorities, inter alia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the State Migration Service, the State Border Guard Service, the Ministry of Social Policy, and the Parliament, Ms. Held underlined the progress Ukraine has achieved in migration management. Moldova and Ukraine commit to fully cover basic needs of migrants in detention

The successive handover of the responsibility of full coverage of migrants’ basic needs in detention from international organizations to the Governments of Moldova and Ukraine is planned by 1 September 2012. The provision of legal assistance to detained migrants within the framework of the SIREADA* project will be upheld until February 2013. Ukrainian and Moldovan migration management authorities renewed their commitment to ensure sustainability of best practices in migrant accommodation at the second SIREADA Regional Steering Committee in Chisinau, Moldova, on 20 March 2012. >>More

IOM Signs Agreement of Cooperation with the Ukrainian Ombudsman

Agreement of Cooperation between the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights was signed in Kyiv today by IOM Ukraine’s Chief of Mission Manfred Profazi and the Ombudsman Nina Karpachova. The Agreement is intended to consolidate efforts on the protection of human rights and freedoms of migrants and countering xenophobia, ethnic and racial intolerance, inter alia within the framework of preparation for the UEFA EURO 2012. >>More

 

Three More Years of Counter-Trafficking Support to Ukrainian Rural Communities

The Swiss Confederation continues its support to preventing human trafficking through social work and strengthening communities in Ukraine. According to Guido Beltrani, Director of the Swiss Cooperation Office in Ukraine, the project, implemented by the International Organization for Migration in partnership with the NGOs Child Well-Being Fund of Ukraine and the Western Ukrainian Resource Centre since 2009, will continue for three more years. >>More
